We've got Wolves here. They take the odd sheep, but mainly stick to the wildlife. That's great that they're being re-introduced to the UK.

When they howl, my dog goes nuts.

Cholo... more thinking that for milleniums fish and Otter/Beaver coped and thrived quite well in the UK... so why is this a problem now?? It's not as if it's an Unnatural species like that killer shrimp or whatever it is??

Re: Reintroducing Wolves to the UK
Am reading George Monbiot's book, Feral, on this. The bloke's clearly a bit of an annoying fist all round, but his whole view on 'rewilding' is interesting and there are a lot of vested interests in various (highly subsidised) industries - food, farming, fishing, agriculture - who are against any changes or reintroductions of species.
He's got a great chapter on how sheep farming completely fucked the country/landscape/ecosystem over a few centuries - sheepwrecked!
Sheep 1- Wolves 0.

Fair point but there are a hell of a lot more people to cater for than millenia ago, commercial fisheries and farms, restocking rivers etc. It's a good thing in general that otters are back as it means the waterways are healthy, but it's not that straightforward, good environmental management and finding a healthy balance is the key.

NS

I think most of the problems with otters is when they get in amongst peoples stocked carp lakes and eat 1000''s and 1000's of quid worth

still they should put fences and stuff up!

Re: Reintroducing Wolves to the UK
I love wildlife probably more than the next guy but I think this a case of trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

The British Isles have been domesticated for millennia. So if you reintroduce an animal whose natural predators/competition you have eliminated and whose natural prey you have eliminated or domesticated, it does not take a genius to work out that there will be some problems. Or at the very least you have no idea what will happen.
